garden furniture with cushions by Amelia Wilson

Back in 2016 we were delighted to have our project for interior designer Amelia Wilson featured in Real Homes magazine.

That comprised a palatial summerhouse (no garden shed, this!) and beautiful deck with seating and planting, making the most of Holly Cottage’s fabulous rural views and location.

Since then, and with her husband’s retirement meaning they have more time to enjoy being outdoors, the talented Mrs Wilson has been keeping us busy with a large extension to the summerhouse’s decked area to provide an outdoor kitchen and dining area.

As well as all suitably original, as you would expect, it is designed to make the culinary and dining experience independent from the house, with two barbecues and a pizza oven plus all the kitchen utensils and a Belfast-ware sink.

When the oven supplier’s stand was a disappointment, Coombe & Sharpe were pleased to produce solid bespoke timberwork using railway sleepers and built to Amelia’s specification to support the pizza oven and a matching stand for the sink.

The fencing is designed to shelter the deck from the worst of the weather but still allow the wind through to make it more resistant to gales, allow light and glimpses of the greenery behind rather than shutting it out. It also provides a handy frame to hang shelves and utensils.

With the designer’s eye for detail, Amelia was keen to reflect the spacing and orientation of the summerhouse cladding in the new fencing slats so the two flow together, particularly as the fence weathers to silver.

You can read more about this and the Holly Cottage project as a whole on Amelia’s blog and find out more about her work on her Facebook page. She’d be pleased to assist if you need help with your own design.

If you’re inspired by this project and are thinking of remodelling your outside space for alfresco sitting, cooking or dining, speak to Coombe & Sharpe. We’re pleased to provide the practical input to your dream of outdoor living.

Brick paving drive way

We were thrilled to work on the grounds of Scoular’s Howe in St Bees for clients David and Julie Cox back in 2014. See the original testimonial from Julie Cox.

Federation of Master Builders

This house was one of three constructed in the grounds of Fleatham House and later won Northern England’s House of the Year 2014, awarded by the Federation of Master Builders, for contractors Carrock Design & Build so there was no question that the exterior and surroundings needed to be of a commensurate standard.

Looking lovely on completion is one thing. Still looking good and meeting the original specification some year down the line marks out the quality of the landscape design and garden architecture build.

We’re pleased to say Scoular’s Howe is maturing well with planting now established and providing softer edges to the fine quality pathways, walls and driveways laid down in 2014.

The Coxes chose some quality garden buildings to complement the exterior areas and these too blend in well, enhancing the overall design.

The site contains and is surrounded by a number of fine mature trees and the new planting and landscaping was designed to harmonise with the woodland setting.

With thanks as always to Julie and David Cox for putting their confidence in Coombe & Sharpe to deliver the quality product they wanted with their original contract and for allowing us back to see and photograph the project three years on.

Real Homes Magazine

We were thrilled when a Coombe & Sharpe project for a long-standing customer featured in her article for ‘Real Homes’ magazine (December 2016 edition).

Dunster House summerhouse
This was a complex brief involving preparing the ground for a beautiful summerhouse supplied by Dunster House, along with drainage works and decking. The garden has been completely relandscaped and raised beds put in, together with a feature patio and matching paths.

Dunster House supply fine quality garden buildings; this is the third one we have installed as part of a garden landscaping project and was fitted out with a woodburning stove and a bar!
We can prepare the base for Dunster House buildings and also offer the complete assembly and installation service to customers if required.

The article is in the current edition of Real Homes available to purchase now.
